[...] In candidate forums and in my written responses to various surveys I have continually beat the drum for community involvement. OK, so what happens if we do make it easier for people to come and if we are able to change the “just trust us attitude”? Will people take advantage of it? I noticed the attendance at the Care3 forum (hosted at the Urban League) did not represent the people who are in that building during the day. In fact, the audience was dominated by people who attended in a quasi professional capacity. Board members, NAACP representatives, Urban League representatives, union, and PTA people filled the room, so where are the parents, teachers, and students whose lives are literally changed daily by the decisions we all make? I wonder if public meetings are another relic of a bygone era. —> http://publiclycrazy.wordpress.com/2007/04/06/how-do-we-really-do-public-involvement/ ~ [...]

The prioities presented are excelant, but perhaps myopic. The frustration that my teacher friends have expressed regarding teaching in a consent decree enviornment are huge.

No one used any electronic slides. WICD TV was there and said they would broadcast some of the forum during some of its news programming. I have no knowledge about what made it to the air though.

Very interesting article, and I hope you follow the editorial series. I was confused about several things, however.

$20 billion has been dumped into Illinois schools because of Blago's outrageous tax modifications past couple years? Really, where did that $20 billion go? Did anyone in the local schools see it? As an employee of the UofI, I know we got hit hard by those budget bites. I am not saying there is no fat to trim, but the way it was implemented... like a doctor wielding a chainsaw, I would not want to go through that again.

Also, I have heard a number of folks, some of which are teachers, decry the Federal NCLB laws as flawed and insufficient. Not being a teacher myself, nor having any children in school, I mostly try to observe and learn from others. I dearly want to see the good intentions of NCLB come to light, instead of an extremely narrow focus on standardized test performance. If legislation like NCLB is actually good and paves the way for something better, I would be 100% behind it. But I have not seen evidence of that, yet.

I would love to see a breakdown of that $20 billion - I am really curious where it went.
